Highlanders' Rookie of the Year one of two re-signings
Standout Highlanders recruits, TK Howden and Veveni Lasaqa, have both re-signed with the club through to 2027.
Both players were lured south from the Hurricanes by returning Highlanders boss Jamie Joseph and ended the 2025 campaign as starters in a young and promising loose forward trio.
Howden returned from injury and immediately staked his claim for the No.6 jersey. The 195 cm Maori All Black is still just 24 years of age, fitting the age profile of this young Highlanders team, but the club says his youth hasn’t stopped him from emerging as a leader in the group.
“Te Kamaka has been immense for us this season — tough, driven, and a real competitor,” said Joseph. “We’re trying to build a team that can grow together, and Te Kamaka is a big part of that vision.”
Highlanders Rookie of the Year, Lasaqa, was one of Super Rugby’s most damaging defenders in his first season in Dunedin, featuring near the top of the dominant tackle stats. His abrasive, energetic game made for a breakout season in his first campaign with the club.
“Veveni brings energy, excitement and a real edge to our loose forwards,” said Joseph. “He’s only scratched the surface of what he can become — we’re thrilled he’s backing himself and backing us.”
Highlanders CEO, Roger Clark, was excited to have the two promising talents recommit as the club builds towards a return to title contention.
“These signings reflect our belief in the future of the Highlanders,” Clark said. “Te Kamaka and Veveni are not just talented players — they’re great young men with the mindset we value. This is another strong step forward for our squad.”
